Alexander Elizarov

Alexander was born in 1954 in the village of Dolgoe, Irshavsky district, Transcarpathian region.

In 1976 he graduated with honors from Kazan State University (KSU, since 2010 – Kazan (Volga) Federal University, KFU) with a degree in Mathematics.

In 1976-1978, he worked as a lecturer at the Department of Differential Equations, Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, KSU. In 1978 he entered the postgraduate course at the Department of Mathematical Analysis of KSU, which he finished ahead of schedule in 1980 with the defense of his Ph.D. thesis in Mathematical Analysis.

In 1980-2013 he worked at the N.G. Chebotarev Research Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (RIMM), KFU, where he rose from a researcher to a professor and director of the Institute. He held the position of director from 1995 to 2013.

In 1991 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the specialty “Mechanics of liquids, gas and plasma”.

2012 to 2014 Alexander Elizarov was an advisor to the rector of KFU; in 2014-2016 he worked as deputy director, head of the department, and then professor at the Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (IMM), KFU.

Since 2017 he has been working as a professor at the Higher School of Information Technologies and Intelligent Systems (HS ITIS), KFU.

Prof. Elizarov is currently a recognized authority in the field of mathematical modeling and inverse boundary problems.

Since the end of the 1990s he conducted research related to the formation of digital scientific libraries, the markup of mathematical texts and methods of searching in them, and the development of electronic publishing. Since 2008, he has conducted a number of studies on the development of the information society.

The total number of scientific works by Prof. Elizarov is about 400, among them: 8 monographs; 22 collective monographs; 239 scientific papers, including those in leading Russian and foreign journals; more than 70 abstracts of reports at various conferences; 7 certificates of registration of computer programs; 4 large tutorials.

Prof. Elizarov prepared 18 candidates of sciences, was a scientific consultant for 2 doctoral dissertations. He was a member of quite a number of doctoral dissertation councils, and repeatedly acted as an opponent for doctoral and candidate dissertations.

Alexander took and continues to take an active part in teaching activities as a professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Informatics of the KFU; Departments of Differential Equations, Aerohydromechanics, Computer Mathematics and Informatics of IMM; Department of Informatics, Information and Library Faculty of the Kazan University of Culture and Arts (KazUCA); Department of Software Engineering of the HS ITIS.

Prof. Elizarov has a H. Mushtari Award of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan for the best scientific work in the field of mathematics (1998), as well as multiple KSU awards in competitions for the best scientific work. For many years he has been heading the scientific direction of the University in mechanics and mathematical modeling.

Prof. Elizarov acted as a guest lecturer with plenary and sectional reports at many international and all-Russian conferences.

He is an expert of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Science Foundation, the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Elizarov is one of the organizers (1996), deputy editor-in-chief, and since 2015 – editor-in-chief of the international mathematical journal “Lobachevskii Journal of Mathematics” (since 2008 published by Springer publishing house); editor-in-chief of the journal “Electronic Libraries”, member of the editorial boards of the journals “Scientific Notes of Kazan University. Physics and Mathematics” (deputy editor-in-chief), Information Society”, “Science and Scientific Information”, “Bulletin of Novosibirsk State University. Series of Information Technologies”, Proceedings of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, “Software systems: theory and applications”, “Bulletin of KazUCA” (deputy chairman of the editorial board).

He is a member of the Russian National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the American Mathematical Society, the German Society of Mathematicians and Mechanics, and the International Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He supervised projects of the Soros Foundation within the project “Creation and support of the Internet Center at KSU” (1998-2001).

In 1997-2005, A.M. Elizarov supervised the project “Creation of the Lobachevsky Mathematical Center for the All-Russian Youth Scientific Schools and Conferences” carried out within the framework of the corresponding federal target program. He was the initiator of the publication of “Proceedings of the Lobachevsky Mathematical Center” (to date, more than 50 volumes have been published). In 1995-2001, he coordinated the project of creating the Volga region fragment of the data transmission network for science and education carried out within the corresponding federal target program.

In 2009 A.M. Elizarov took an active part as the organizing director in the creation of the Kazan Branch of the Interdepartmental Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Elizarov was awarded the academic titles of senior scientific worker (1982), associate professor (1984), professor (1996); the honorary title “Honored Scientist of the Republic of Tatarstan” (2004); the title of Honorary Professor of KazUCA and Honored Professor of KFU; he was awarded the badge “Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation” (2007). In 2014 he was awarded a commendation of the President of the Russian Federation.

He is married and has three sons: Roman (born 1977), Andrei (born 1983) and Artyom (born 1998).
